How to Oil a New Cricket Bat
This section is essential reading if you have just purchased a new English Willow bat.
Raw English Willow needs moisture to remain supple and resist cracking under impact. Oiling the wood fibres before first use significantly extends the life of your bat.
What you need: Raw linseed oil. Do not use boiled linseed oil as it dries to a lacquer that seals the wood incorrectly and can damage the blade.
Step by step process:
- Lay the bat face up on a flat surface.
- Apply a thin coat of raw linseed oil to the face, edges and back of the blade using a clean cloth. Do not oil the splice (the V-shaped join between handle and blade). Do not oil any sticker or label area.
- Wipe off any excess immediately. You want a thin absorbed coat, not a pooled one that sits on the surface.
- Leave the bat face down to dry for 24 hours at room temperature. Do not place it in direct sunlight or near a heat source.
- Repeat this process 3 to 5 times before the bat’s first use.
- After each season or approximately every 1500 to 2000 balls, apply one maintenance coat.
Knocking in: After oiling, knock the bat in with a bat mallet or an old used ball for 4 to 6 hours before facing any hard bowling. This compresses the willow fibres at the surface and dramatically reduces the chance of cracking in the first few matches.
Properly prepared bats last significantly longer and handle the impact of fast bowling far better than bats taken straight to the nets unprepared.
